7th Annual ‘Peace in the Park’ Event Held in Salisbury

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the  seventh annual “Peace in the Park” event held Saturday afternoon, Sept. 19, at the Salisbury City Park.

Hundreds of people, along with a diverse array of religious, community and civic groups, turned out for the event,  which was first held in Salisbury in 2009 in celebration of the annual United Nations’ International Day of Peace. One of the highlights of this year’s event was the dedication of a permanent peace pole, which features the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight languages. Other  highlights included live music, a drum circle, dance groups, children’s activities and information tables.

Constitution event is Saturday in City Park

In honor of the 228th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution, Republican Women of Wicomico County will host a celebration near the bandstand Sept. 19.

Scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. at City Park, The Constitution Birthday Celebration, free and open to the public, will feature guest speakers, music and honors for high school students who wrote patriotic winning essays.

“The idea came from Miss Shirley Smack. It was her idea to have this celebration,” Ellen Bethel, club member, said about Smack, the 84-year-old club president.

Could Salisbury be getting a splash park?

splashpark“OK,” Brad Gillis asked the Salisbury City Council. “Who wants to get wet?”

With those refreshing words, Gillis made a splash at the work session Monday when he proposed a local water park he described as a sprayground – a playground that’s wet.

The goal is to have it open by next year and  dubbed Splashbury.

“It’s an ambitious goal but we’re going to shoot for a star,” Gillis said, asking for a consensus from the council, so planning can continue.

Annual Youth Fishing Derby










Cast your line and reel in the big ones! Join us for the Annual Free Youth Fishing Derby at Salisbury City Park where children 15 and younger can take part in America’s Favorite Family Past-time. The park’s pond will be stocked with approximately 500 Blue Gills, which will join the pond’s current inhabitants including Catfish, Large-Mouth Bass, Perch, and Carp.

Registration: 8:30-9:00am on site

Program Fee: Free Event!

Age Group: Youth: 15 and younger

Date(s): Saturday, June 6, 2015

Time(s): Fishing 9:00-11:00am; Lunch and Trophies 11:00am-12:00pm

Details: Come on out to the Annual Free Youth Fishing Derby! Please bring your own bait and rod. Food and Drinks will be provided for participants. Trophies will also be awarded incuding but not limited to: Most Fish Caught, Most Unusual Catch, and Biggest Fish.

Teen encourages locals to‘take a book, leave a book’

B9316101079Z.1_20150207205740_000_G1H9S9C4G.1-0A Salisbury teen hopes to encourage area residents to take a book, leave a book.

Its all part of Douglas Buck’s Little Free Library project in Wicomico County.

Buck built the four library boxes for his Eagle Scout project. The 16-year-old is a member of Boy Scout Troop 176 in Salisbury.

The Little Free Libraries are located in Wicomico County at the following sites: north at Gordy Park, south at the ballpark in Fruitland, children’s play area; east at Ben’s Red Swings and west right outside Chipman Elementary School.

Bike Trail Cleanup

Save the date and join Bike-SBY and Eastern Shore IMBA on MLK 2015 to clean and maintain the bike trails located around the Salisbury City Park. Parking is at 755 South Park Drive.
